Top Tip for expats moving to the USA East Coast during winter!

Moving with UPakWeShip

With all the snow around, it reminds me of our first winter storm when we moved from London to just outside of Baltimore MD. Moving with UPakWeShipIt was our first winter living in the rental house in Columbia Maryland. Being a Brit who had lived in  the London suburbs I had experienced a few inches of snow before so I thought I had better buy  one of those orange plastic snow plough  (or is it plow) shovel thingies that all our American neighbors had in their garages before the “apocalyptic” winter storm hit. We had also bought a few bottles of water and stuck an extra loaf of bread in the freezer so we thought we were good to go when it started snowing. And snow it did!!

“Heh look dear I say to my wife” the neighbors are all out shoveling snow before its has even stopped! They are a bit hard core out there in the actual blizzard! In fact they kept going out every few hours and clearing the driveway which no sooner as they had finished was covered in snow again. Very Strange!

I’m smart, I’ll wait until it stops and then do it all in one go me thinks!

It did stop snowing, eventually, the next day! After the nights continuous snow and the wind, my neighbors still had a few inches of driveway to clear.

Now it was my turn! After putting on all 10 layers of clothing, I grab my plastic orange snow plough shovel thingy and pressed the garage door button (loved the all American electric garage door opener btw) and was ready to clear the driveway!

Problem number 1 hit me!  Where exactly was the driveway?

Problem number 2, how do I start to move a 2 foot thick solid block of snowy ice from my driveway / front yard wherever it may be!

My bloody orange plastic shoverly plowy thingy broke as I tried to cut into the ice in the first 5 minutes so all I was left with, was my garden spade.

It took me a good 4 days to get the driveway looking reasonable enough that the minivan could drive down it without totally skidding sideways.

Needless to say I wasn’t very popular with the neighborhood home owners association that apparently stipulates in its laws that all driveways and sidewalks need to be cleared in 24 hours. We wont even go there with my wife and kids who couldn’t go out to the shops or soccer practice etc. for days after everyone else but I did win a few points back when on Monday they still couldn’t get to school!

Anyway bottom line, do like the neighbors do when it snows. Don’t go all British. Be American and “Go Get her done” (as they say,or if the driveway is female), every few hours while its still snowing a blizzard………… It seems crazy but it works!

I learnt the lesson the hard way so you don’t have to!

PS, buy some bags of salt, buy a metal snow plough thingy and don’t ever leave cans of soda in the car overnight , even if your child says its for a science fair project! Not unless you need hubby to buy you a new minivan!

More moving to USA tips to come!
